Product Description

Welcome to Gotham Academy, the most prestigious school in Gotham City. Only the best and brightest students may enter its halls, study in its classrooms, explore its secret passages, summon its terrifying spirits…

Okay, so Gotham Academy isn’t like other schools. But Olive Silverlock isn’t like other students. After a mysterious incident over summer break, she’s back at school with a bad case of amnesia, an even worse attitude… and an unexplained fear of bats.

Olive’s supposed to show new student Maps Mizoguchi the ropes. Problem: Maps is kid sister of Kyle, Olive’s ex. Then there’s the ghost haunting the campus…the secret society conducting bizarre rituals…and Bruce Wayne, the weirdo billionaire who funds the Academy - and may know the secret to Olive’s big mystery.

Find out in GOTHAM ACADEMY VOL. 1, the acclaimed new series from co-writers Becky Cloonan (DEMO) and Brendan Fletcher (BATGIRL) and artist Karl Kerschl (TEEN TITANS: YEAR ONE)! Collects GOTHAM ACADEMY #1-6.

From School Library Journal

Gr 7 Up—This slick volume collects the first six issues of the DC comics set in a prestigious school in Gotham City. After a traumatic summer, Olive Silverlock struggles to get back into her school routine while showing around new student Maps Mizoguchi and trying to avoid her ex, Kyle, Maps''s older brother. But with a possible ghost knocking on the walls and secret societies roaming the halls, Olive isn''t coping well with the knowledge of her mother''s precarious health condition, her studies, and her classmates'' bullying. When the teen begins to recover strange memories about a fire and keeps running into a mysterious stranger with glowing eyes who seems to know her more than she knows him, she bands with other school misfits to uncover some of Gotham Academy''s dark secrets. Filled with spunky and quirky characters and unexpected plot turns, this work adds an intriguing and fresh layer to the Batman mythos. In this tale, Bruce Wayne, the school''s benefactor, is treated with disdain by Olive and the Batman signal is a daily occurence. Kerschl''s campy art is by turns luminous and gloomy, enhancing Cloonan and Fletcher''s energetic and sometimes contemplative text. The size and shape of the panels are used to great effect, adeptly building momentum with panache and verve. VERDICT The emphasis on friendships and high school drama mixed with action-packed sequences and an otherworldly tone makes this graphic novel perfect for not only fans of the franchise but those who enjoy boarding school fiction.—Shelley Diaz, School Library Journal

Review

“A little bit CW television series and a little bit Harry Potter, with a wee touch of manga-inspired storytelling. While that might all sound like an awful mix to some, Gotham Academy actually turns out to be a really fun and charming book.”— Nerdist.com

“As it turns out, it’s spooky, weird and like nothing DC Comics has ever released before.”-- MTV News

“Slick, charming, and, dare we say it, fun . Each turn of the page pulling you further into the book’s beautifully imaginative world.”— IGN

“The book is quirky and cute, a Scooby Doo mystery wrapped in an anime shell and served with teenage angst on the side.”— Newsarama

“This series is so fun and inventive that it''s hard to not love it. Cloonan, Fletcher and Kerschl understand how to make good -- no, great comics.”— Comic Book Resources

Cloonan''s first solo graphic novel, East Coast Rising Volume 1, earned her a third Eisner Award nomination for Best New Series. I picked up GA vol 1 without knowing anything about it. It was on sale and I saw the Bat symbol against the main characters with bats flying around the edges so I bought it on a whim. Three months later I sat down to read it and did not stop till I was finished. I typically read Batman and Bat-family books so what does this novel have to do with Batman and the Bat-family? Well as it turns out, not so much...yet. This book is unique in that it is Scooby-Doo mixed with teen drama mixed with Harry Potter all in the Gotham setting.
The way the story started was a little jarring. I''ll admit I had to turn back to the cover to make sure I bought volume one. There are a few moments where the characters are in one setting and immediately in another on the next panel which made me wonder if I missed something. The story itself was just okay for me. There is a ghost haunting the school and Olive and Maps need to get to the bottom of it. You know something happened to Olive during the summer that has completely changed her and she has a huge dislike for Batman and that gets dragged on for awhile. There are some unanswered questions and a huge set-up for the next volume that has me interested in buying it and because of that this book is a success. It created interesting characters and puts them in a great location where possibilities are endless. Part of the fun is the characters that do show up because of the Gotham City location.
The art in this book is different than I am used to but that is not a bad thing. I liked the distinct look of each character and it was great to see the concept art in the back of the book with descriptions of the process.

Overall: This book is unique in the DC lineup with a great setting and art that makes each character stand out. The book''s ending left me wanting more and I would recommend this book for all ages.

This one was a hit at our house. Perfect fit for me and the kids. I had to steal it back from my kids so that I could finish it. Set in the Batman universe with a teen POV, we follow Olive, a student at Gotham Academy. Something bad happened to her last summer, something she can''t really remember. While checking out a ghostly presence at school, she discovers answers for her own personal problems (and tons more questions too, of course). Diverse cast, the illustrations are fantastic, and there was just the right amount of tension and danger. We will be reading more.

I liked the cover but wanted to know more about the crazy action scene depicted so decide to get a compilation onibus book. This proved to be a cost effective way to enjoy the great twist on a Gotham theme. The Academy has some regular students and some..,er..,unregualr ones. It''s these we get to follow as they create friendships and get embroiled in some weird adventures. There are ''secret'' passages behind the school walls which house some unusual residents. However, not all are bad guys,apparently... Some of the other students have secrets and stories to tell. This is the premise for the adventurs,to find out the truth..,sort of. Plus of course some good old fashioned fun and frolicks, like dangling from rooftops on swinging ropes. Or telling scary stories using a torch to illuminate one''s face only to be interrupted by a real scary event. Imaginations run riot here and not just the creators but the characters join in too, great stuff. Some pretty classic teenage rivalries too.Great artwork with good colours and shadows.I''m glad I bought the collected issues 1-6.

So I don''t usually read graphic novels, and I have never read any batman stuff, I was a bit worried when I first started reading that I might not be able to pick up on little details that other fans could, I really needn''t have worried. There were small things but I was able to get through easily enough. The characters were all varied and unique. I had a soft spot in my heart for a few of them. Olive and Maps were a loveable duo to follow, I badly can''t remember Maps brother name, but he was the typical nice guy who would stick by you, and I also support him with Olive. I can''t leave a review and not mention the art which is gorgeous, the facial expressions, colours, scenery, all perfect. I think it''s safe to say I will be buying the second, and I can''t wait to see what antics the Gotham academy students get up to next!

GOTHAM ACADEMY Q+A with Becky Cloonan, Brenden Fletcher, and Karl Kerschl

Q: When you were in school, were you a Goody Two-shoes, a bit of rebel or did you fall somewhere in between?

Becky Cloonan: I fell squarely in between the two. I still do! It's a good place to be. You don't want to be too good! Be just bad enough to keep people on their toes, but you don't want to burn bridges either. It's a tricky balancing act!

Brenden Fletcher: I thought I was a Goody Two-shoes, but always managed to raise the ire of those in charge. Seems I didn't really take well to figures of authority. Go figure.

Karl Kerschl: Super Goody Two-shoes until grade eleven, and then I got seriously into comics and developed a problem with authority.

Q: What’s it like writing such young characters? Did you have to do any all-ages research to get in the mindsets of the students at Gotham Academy?

Becky: A lot of Maps and Olive's relationship is based on me and my best friend growing up! Memories and friendships and people I knew, all this informs Gotham Academy. A lot of the characters and relationships come from real places, even if in the end they don't resemble any one particular person. I try not to make the book too topical either, so that in ten years it still reads like it was written yesterday.

Brenden: My niece was seven when Becky, Karl and I began imagining the world and characters of GOTHAM ACADEMY. Between spending time with my niece and investigating my own interests (aka "regressing back to my childhood") the characters emerged naturally. Writing Maps is positively the most fun one can possibly have working in comics. I highly recommend it to any writer who can pry the character from my hands!

Q: Will we be getting any looks into the backgrounds of fan-favorite characters like Pomeline Fritch, Colton Rivera and the Mizoguchi siblings in the future?

Becky: Yes! Fans of Maps will be happy to know she is teaming up with the one and only Damian Wayne for Gotham Academy issue 7! And fans of Kyle will really enjoy issue 8—we get to know these characters a lot more in this next series. I can't wait for people to read these issues!

Brenden: We're so excited to dig into the backgrounds of all the characters of GOTHAM ACADEMY but at only 20 pages a month in which to tell our story we're barely able to cram in all the mystery and action the book requires! Maybe if we're lucky Maps will get her own miniseries one day!

Karl: We have backstories for all of the characters, and issue 8 is pretty much ALL Mizoguchi. I would draw a whole series about the Mizoguchi family! They’re the best.

Q: Karl, You have such a beautiful and unique art style—what’s inspired and informed it?

Karl: Thank you! I try to draw differently depending on the story I’m drawing. Gotham Academy is inspired by a lifelong interest in animation—I’m trying to approximate the feeling of traditional cel animation over painted backgrounds, which would be impossible without the fantastic team of colorists on our book. Stylistically, my sense of design owes a lot to Studio Ghibli, Macross and Street Fighter.
